Guidelines for prayer and fasting found in the book of Matthew
1. PURPOSE: During the fast, we abstain from food and fast for a purpose. Fasting from food goes beyond mere dieting or detoxing. Fasting from food is a means of hungering for God, demonstrating our desperation and dependence on Him. Instead of focusing on eating, we allocate that time to prayer and reading the Word of God.
2. SACRIFICE: Fasting is traditionally associated with giving up food, but God may prompt you to relinquish other dependencies, such as social media, entertainment, or hobbies. Though challenging, look for the blessing that comes from stretching our faith.
3. OBEDIENCE: Regarding the specifics of the fast, seek guidance from God. Engage in prayer and ask, “God, what do YOU want from me?” Give attention to how He leads you personally.
4. FREEDOM: Fasting should be free from guilt or religious constraints. The Bible warns us to avoid pride and refrain from bragging. Let us refrain from comparing ourselves to others or passing judgment.
5. WISDOM: Exercise wisdom, especially concerning serious medical issues. And we encourage you to
be accountable to your doctor, family, and friends throughout the fasting period.
