Training
Jesus to the City
Message from Pastor Jonathan
Training Overview
The Doorstep Interaction
Guidelines for engaging neighbors with clarity and compassion.
Step 1: Preparation & Mindset
Pray: No better first step than taking a moment for the Lord to bless the homes you will visit.
Remember the Goal: Remember that your primary mission is to lovingly represent the gift of Jesus, and leave your Bible and church invite, and if possible share a short moment of prayer.
Get Ready:
- Ensure you have your assigned list of 10 houses and the “Jesus to the City” bags containing a Bible, info card, and invitation.
- Be familiar with your training, the content of the bag and the information on the cards should you have questions on how to better get connected to the church.
- The invitations card link to connecting people to their areas of interest, including if a person makes a decision for Christ or has a prayer request.
Step 2: The Doorstep Interaction
Here is what we would like to share with our Jesus to the City outreach.
Introduce yourself – “Hello! Our names are ____________. What’s your name?”
“We’re from Thomas Road Baptist Church and we’re celebrating our 70th anniversary – and we have a gift for YOU!” (Hand them the bag)
“On behalf of TRBC we would like to give you this Bible and a free drink coupon for our church coffee shop. There’s also an info card about our ministries, and an invite to Easter services if you don’t have a home church”
“Is there anything we can remember in prayer for you or your family?” “Would you mind if I pray right now for this request?” If they say yes, lead in a short prayer.
“That card also has information about God’s love that has changed my life and is a gift for you too if you’ve never met Him”
“Thanks for your time. God bless you and your family!”
Step 3: Safety & Boundaries
Interact with Adults Only: If a child answers the door, immediately ask to speak with a parent or guardian.
If possible, go with a spouse or friend.
Respect the Home: Never ask to enter someone’s house or use their restroom; keep the interaction on the doorstep. Be mindful some people feel comfortable with visitors, others may not. We want to always respect the homes we visit.
If there is posted signs such as “No Trespassing or No Solicitation, we respect these signs and do not visit.
If someone is uninterested or busy, remain polite, leave the gift if they allow it, and move on to the next house.
Visit during the daylight. We do not wish to visit too late or too early.
We do ask that you do not add anything extra to your Bible Packet.
Step 4: Follow-Up
Record the Visit: Mark your progress on your list so we can track the progress across the city.
Continue Praying: Even after leaving the doorstep, continue to pray for the families you met and the seeds that were planted.
